Create a list of similarities and differences between World War I and World War II. Include information on foreign policy and societal changes on the homefront.
There were numerous similarities and differences between World War I and World War II. Similarities include, first of all, that the two sides were almost the same in both wars: Russia, Britain, and the U.S. against Germany. Also, Italy was on the German side at the beginning of both wars, and switched to the Allied side in both wars also. Some differences included that Japan was on the Allied side in WWI and the German side in WWII. Second, WWI was a war of slow destruction through trench warfare, whereas, WWII was more of a war of movement. An important difference between the two wars was the presence of the holocaust in WWII. Lastly, a key difference between the wars was the technology in WWII, which surpassed WWI technology: airplanes, bombers, tanks, radios, etc. In addition, there was a specific difference in U.S.’s foreign policies towards European nations. Even though the U.S. was neutral in the beginning of WWI, their neutrality greatly increased for WWII. For example, to ensure that the whole nation would not intervene in British matters, Roosevelt passed the Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936, and 1937, to prohibit trade and loans and credits to belligerents, to ban citizens from traveling on belligerent vessels except at their own risk, and, lastly, to keep the U.S. from intervening in the Spanish civil war. In conclusion, WWI and WWII were similar in various ways, resulting in a more paranoid U.S. in WWII.
Similarites between WWI and WWII are the atempts of remaining neutral, Germany was the one to blame, and America helped end the war. The differances are that Japan was not part of the Allies in WWII, the U.S. tried to make friends with Latin America, and after the war U.S. joined the United Nations (unlike after WWI when the U.S. didn't join The League Of Nations.) I agree with kobe17 with the two sides were almost identical in both wars. MPH
The similarities between the wars were that the countries fighting against each otther were jsut about the same. Russia, Britain, US, and France against Germany, Italy, and Japan. I also agree with midgetsxrulexthexworld91 in that Germany was the cause of the beginning of the wars with their Nazis in WWII and the unrestricted submarine warfare of WWI. Also US hoped to stay neutral within both wars, and eventually joined in each. Differnces were that the US joined for different reasons in the wars. One was the sinking of the lusitania and the other becuase of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The ending of WWII also brought a scare of nuclear weopons after the A-bomb being dropped in JApan twice. Making people begin to fear the ultimate outcome of war. Where in WWI there wasnt so much killing by one single bomb, it took a number of weopons such as planes, machine guns and more to take anywhere near the affect.
Both of the World Wars have similarties as well as differences that make them unique and bring nightmares. Firstly, the Wars were similar due to the fact that some of the same countries participated in it. The Allies which consisted of Great Britain, France, US and Russia and the they were against Germany. Another similarity between the wars is also the fact that America was provoked to join the war instead of volunteerly joining the European warfare. Both wars are pretty much fought for the same cause: to stop the expansion of Germany.
Some differences between the 2 wars include that WWI was provoked by Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, whereas, in WWII Japan provoked America into joining the war due to Pearl Harbor. Althought both wars were fought for a reason: to stop Germany, WWII focused of other issues as well such as the ongoing horror of the Holocaust and the totalitarian governments that arose, not only in Germany(Nazi) but in Italy(Fascist) and Japan. During World War I Americans weren't as isolationist as they were in WWII. For Instance the creation of the NYE Committee, America First Committe and the creation of the Neutrality Acts shows how Americans were more determined to stay neutral and isolationist.
So although both of the wars were similar they had many differences that make each war memorable.
Both wars were based on German fears of Russian imperial expansion.
In WWI the overriding German position was to prevent Russian expansion. The attack on France in August 1914 was designed to quickly defeat the French army, then move east, for a more longer fight with the Russians. Austria Hungary recognized the Russian threat as well and joined Germany in their fight.
Of course, Germany also had ambitions to gain overseas empires comparable to those of the British and other matters, but all those were seen to the basic desire to hold back the Russian.
Russia's military potential was never realized. Germany defeated them over three years using only a secondary effort. However, Germany being defeated by the Allied powers, prevented her from exploiting the collapse of Russian power. Under the leadership of the ruthless tyrants, Lenin and Stalin, Russia recovered and by the 1930's again presented a threat to western culture.
Thus, Hitler's Germany was faced, again, with a dreaded Russian expansion. The overriding German military goal of WWII was to defeat the Russians. All other issues were peripheral including D Day, battle of Britain, Egypt, etc. All those were peripheral battles that paled in comparison with the giant struggle to hold back the Russians. Most western historians are too bogged down in glorifying Churchill and and studying the Battle of the Bulge to understand the gist of WWII, ie, the struggle between Germany and Russia. That struggle would determine who would dominate Europe for the next fifty or more years, and reviews of Anzio and Patton do not address this fundamental issue.
Thus it comes down to this: both wars were a titantic struggle between the relatively western looking German peoples and the Asiatic rooted culture of the Russians. With the short sighted help of the British and their various allies, the Russian won. As a result their culture, not western, spread over eastern Europe, the middle east and most of east and southeast Asia.
The similariteis in World War I and World War II, was that Germany was the main reason both wars began. In WWI the unrestricted submarine warfare caused the war to start, WWII was caused by the Nazis. The same countries were involved in both World Wars, they were: The United States, Germany, Britian, and Russia. In WWI and WWII the United States tried to stay neutral, but that didn't last long, we joined in, in both wars. A couple differences between the two wars are, in World War I there wasn't as many casualities. Meaning the majority of the fighting was with guns because the technology was not as advanced as in WWII. In WWII we dropped two bombs on Japan and caused millions of casualities just in Japan. Another difference was in the technological advances in transportation and weapons. WWI we had machine guns, planes, tanks, etc. WWII had bombs, guns, planes, ships, etc. all of which far exceeded weapons in WWI.
The similarities b/w the wars were that the main culprit I guess you can say was Germany. Another similarity is that is was the same countries on the same sides except for Japan. Another major similarity was the US's want to be neutral throughout the war and not take any side (although that failed both times).
The differences were the causes of the war being WWWI being the assassination of the archduke ferd. and his wife, and also warfare in the ocean between Germany and other countries. While in WWII, the major thing was the attack on Pearl Harbor. Another major difference was that Japan switched sides to the Central Powers with Germany and the others.
I agree with Maranda (migetsrule...) because we have the same ideal of what the similarities and differences were. So that means I also agree with kobe17. YAY NO I get extra credit
During WWI and WWII there were many different similarities between the two. In WWI the US tried to stay neutral and out of European affairs because of Washington's Neutrality Proclamation, and in both wars they eventually got dragged in. Also as said by kobe17 the same sides were pretty much against each other in the war. Britain and the US against Germany. Germany was the accuser of all the damage in WWII just like in WWI. Both wars also had a turning point that changed the war when the US came in late.
Some of the differences between the two wars were that the sides were different. In the first world war it was the US, France, Britain, and Italy against Germany and Austria Hungary. And in the Second World War Japan joined in with Germany and Italy and went against the US, the Soviet Empire and Britain. The wars used two totally different strategies. In WWI trench warfare became the staple but in WWII a new technique called total war mobilized all the resources in a country in order to stop them from being able to fight.I also agree with brownie-pants with the fact that the country joined the war for different reasons. The first one was because Germany didnt agree to their submarine warfare issues. In the Second One the US joined because they were attacked by one of the opposing powers at Pearl Harbor.
For both WWI and WWII, was America's attempts to stay neutral between both of the wars, due to the original tradition of isolationism, Also, as Kobe17 stated, the sides were more or less exactly the same; Allies: (Britain, France, later on Russia, and America after being forced into both), and the Axis powers:(Germany, Italy, and Japan). An added note, Germany was the main enabler of warfare, and the "main cause" of the world's problems. This leads to the differences. Japan, for one, was NOT on the Axis powers in WWI, but joined with Hitler and Mussolini in WWII. Another monumental difference between the two wars was the style of fighting. WWII was purely gaining defensive choke holds on the enemy, forcing them to rely upon trench warfare. As for WWII, it was focused on pure assault. "Get in, wipe out, move on," if you will. One main example being McArthur's "Island-Hopping" technique used in the Pacific theater. Also, the technology of radios , tank warfare nuclear warfare and blitzkrieg? style warfare, was a huge factor in fighting the war. Back to similarities, America's refusal to enter overseas wars was still fought with the same vigor. As Kobe17 also stated, Roosevelt's Neutrality Acts of 1935, (prohibited the selling of war arms to belligerent nation's), 1937 (prevented us from helping the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil-War and boarding belligerent nation's ships) and 1939 which allowed the cash-and carry basis. That's about all I can really remember.
On January 31, 1917 Germany announced its decision to wage unrestricted submarine warfare on all ships, including American ships, in the war zone. This along with the Zimmerman telegram, which stated that Germany and Mexico were allies, along with Woodrow Wilson’s statement of “the war to end all wars” and his fourteen points, projected America into WWI. Along with the help of people like George Creel, who’s job was to raise American propaganda of the war and unite America into a nation with war fever. This extreme nationalism was just what Woodrow needed to furnish his fourteen points.
Like the unrestricted submarine warfare encountered in WWI, the bombing of Pearl Harbor was a major event, which directed the United States into WWII. The U.S. foreign policy in WWI was reinforced to prevent joining WWII. The Neutrality Acts were made to keep the United States out of a conflict. By declining to use its vast industrial strength to aid its democratic friends and defeat its totalitarian foes, the United States helped to provoke the aggressors. Japan was on the allied side in WWI, then switched to the axis powers in WWII.
Similarities -Start out with US as a neutral nation -US provided support to both sides but later sway towards UK and French side, also known as the Allied Powers -Germany's Aggression starts both wars -Nations on both sides of the conflict generally stayed the same
Differences - WWI -US stayed out of the war because it didn't want to be involved in European affairs -US joins war because of Germany's broken promises of non-aggression to neutral nations -Italy was part of allies in WWI -Russia leaves the war in WWI
Differences - WWII -US society starts swaying to Alliance side because of continued trade with Britain, through acts such as Cash and Carry, and Lend-Lease Act -Japan and Italy join the Central/Axis powers -US passes Neutrality Acts to declare neutrality -Prelude to Cold War, a potential WWIII
Similarties and differences in WWI and WWII were that the Soviet Union, U.S., and Britain were against the Germans,a commanality both wars shared. In both wars they started out as wanting to remain nuetral as well but eventually ended up in the war.
Differences would be that WWII moved at a faster pace than the WWI did. The nuetrality acts didnt come until WWII beause AMerica wanted to stay nuetral in WWI but could not.In WWII Roosevelt did not allow AMericans to travel. The reasons for joining the war also differed, WWI was because of the german submarine warfare and WWII was because of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Similarities between World War I and World War II can be found within its foreign policy of establishing international peace corporations such as the League of Nations and the United Nations. In addition the U.S. pleads of neutrality are found in both wars, in which the U.S. promoted non intervention into the war. Within World War I the U.S. made the Sussex Pledge in prevention of U.S. interventions. Parallel to that action the U.S. used appeasement and the Stimson Doctrine to prevent intervention. Within both Wars the U.S. also prepared military troops through the Selective Service Act and National Defense Act. Lastly, both wars had citizens that were against U.S. intervention of the war, such as Populist, Progressives, and Socialist within WWI and Americas First Committee within WWI.
Differences between WWI and WWII can be found in their peace treaties in which WWI peace treaty was geared towards punishing Germany, where as the agreements in Yalta were more influenced by creating a long-lasting peace. Within the U.S. society and WWI the U.S. public media promoted U.S. interventions where as the within WWII America First Committee demoted U.S. interventions. In addition a direct attack upon the U.S. caused them to intervene. Lastly the U.S.’ policies towards creating peace treaty were more accepted within WWII than during the Treaty of Versailles after WWI.
There were many similarities between World War I and World War II. First, there was the fact that they claimed neutrality, but they were eventually drawn into the war by, the same country both times, Germany. Also in the wars were the same countries that were also fighting for the same sides (i.e the Allied Powers versus the Axis Powers). Also the United States was the main factor in ending the wars. Also the US entered both the wars because of Germany's braking of the agreements that they had made.
There were also many differences that occured between the two wars. There was differences in the United States foriegn policies. The means for US non-intervention to WWII was far greater than the means of WWI. Roosevelt had passed many Neutrality Acts. During World War I the main warfare tactic was trench warfare, whereas in WWII the main tactic was total war.
Similarities of WWI and WWII -Germany started them -The U.S. wanted to remain neutral -Both involved the same countries
Differences in WWI -This war was started because of the submarine warfare that Germany had. But actually it started after Zimmerman Telegram because from there the Americans felt that Germany wanted war.
Differences in WWII -This was was started because of the bombings at Pearl Harbor. So after the U.S. declared war with Japan, Germany and Italy joined in. They was alot more isolationism, and the US still wanted to stay neutral. They passed Neutrality Acts and also tried to stay out of many things. However it was hard with the fascism going on it Germany and Italy.
Both wars were based on German fears of Russian imperial expansion.
In WWI the overriding German position was to prevent Russian expansion. The attack on France in August 1914 was designed to quickly defeat the French army, then move swiftly east, for a more prolonged fight with the Russians. Austria/Hungary and the Ottomans recognized the Russian threat as well and joined Germany in their fight.
Of course, Germany also had ambitions to gain overseas empires comparable to those of the British/French and other matters, but all those were peripheral to the basic desire to hold back the Russian.
As it turned out, Russia was a paper tiger in WWI. Their military potential was never realized. Germany defeated them over three years using only a secondary effort. However, Germany being defeated by the western powers, prevented her from exploiting the collapse of Russian power.
Wow it feels weird to do this for a second time, and lets get this little fact straight, don't trust Marcus to write down a URL.
And since it looks like alot less work, im just gonna copy \\X// ] |_ 1 [ /\ (V)'s style (wth?)
Similarities - Both originated because of European problems - Both involved the Major World Britain, Russia, U.S., Germany, Japan, Italy - U.S. involvement was caused by the U.S. being provoked, rather were striked, first - Both times the U.S. sided with Britain to fight against Germany
WWI - U.S. involvement was based on violation of German restricted submarine warfare - Austrian-Hungary Empire - Sussex Pledge - Primarily Trench Warfare - Triple Alliance/Entente - Woodrow Wilson - Treaty of Versailles - Franz Ferdinand - "The War to End All Wars"
WWII - Hitler - Holocaust - Pearl Harbor - FDR - Interment Camps - "Cash and Carry"-"Lend-Lease" - Self-Determination - Axis and Allies - Africa, Austrailia, and South East Asia involved for major battles - Spanish Civil War divided the nation of spain
Similarities... Both WWI and WWII were meant to stop expansion- Germain fears. Germany provoked both wars One being the "Nazis" and the other being "unrestricted warfare". In both war U.S. tried to remain neutral, practiced isolationism.(neutral acts) In both wars it was the U.S., Britain, France, and Russia allied against Germany . Italy was invovled in the intro of both wars and then traded to the U.S., Britian, Russia and France corner of the ring. U.S. joined both wars late so to say, almost forced to by the opponent. Memorably both ended with a massive number of casualities.
Differences... WWI was less advanced technology wise(old- fashioned). WWII was deffinetly a modern war, consisting of advanced transportation, cummunication, warfare tactics, and machinery. U.S. jumped into the first war because of sinking of submarines(unresstricted submarine warfare)and the second for the unexpected visit from Japan(Pearl Harbor)WWI less advanced - machine guns, bombs, plans. WWII - submarines, bomb, ships, tanks, etc. WWII U.S. was more determined to stay out of the war, because of the three Neurality Acts(no loans, travealing, money, credit, or even traces or connections with biligerents)
I agree with both midgetsXruleXtheXworld91 and brownie-pants about the opinion of the U.S. being provoked to enter both wars.
I agree with kobe17, and tinkerbell09 when they both mentioned the technological advances in WWII were much greater than in WWI.
I agree with tinkerbell09 and midgetsxrulexthexworld91 when they stated that "Germany" is to blame for the start of both wars.
There are many differences and similarities between WWI and WWII. First of all these two wars were similar because it was the same countries fighting in both of the wars. These countries included Russia, Britain, The U.S., Germany, and Italy. Another similarity is the fact that at the beginning of both of the wars, Italy started off fighting on Germany's side and then eventually switched over to the Allies side. Also, at the start of both wars, the U.S. tried to remain neutral but eventually got dragged in anyways.
Although there were some similarities between these two wars, there were also differences. The first difference was the reason for the U.S. entering in the war. The reason for American involvement in WWI was because of Germany's unresticted submarine warfare and the sinking of the Luistina whereas American involvement in WWII was because of the brutal attack on Pearl Harbor. Another difference between the two wars was that WWII and many more technological advances than WWI. For example, in WWII airplanes, tanks, radios, and even the atomic bomb were used. The last major difference was the Holocaust in Germany.
I agree with raiders10 when they mentioned the countries that were involved in both of the wars because we both used this fact as a similarity.
I also agree with brownie-pants when they said that WWI and WWII both had similarities and differences that made both of these wars memorable.
WWI and WWII have many similarities as well as differences. The similarities are the obvious of engaging many nations to stop the threat of Germany in both wars. The main difference was the goal of what was being fought for. The Germans in the First World War were looking to gain control of the trade routes of the sea and a rivalry with England. The Second World War was a battle against the fascist party of the Nazi Germans, and against the Japanese empire, which was expanding to possibly meet the Germans.
There were also differences in strategies. The First World War was started out as an offensive tactic by the Germans that overtook Belgium and then threatened to go into France, but was quickly turned to a defensive strategy after the death of Schlieffen. The Second World War was more than a border conflict or nation take-over; it was a regional takeover by Germany and Japan that involved nations throughout Europe and Asia. The scale of conflict was on a much larger level during World War II. The one outstanding strategy or tactic that was used by the Japanese was the use of the kamikaze pilots.
There were also differences in technology. During the First World War, inventions like poisonous gas shells, tanks, and aircraft were very primitive but the Second World War produced well built tanks, aircraft for bombing, as well as the atomic bomb. Ships were also equipped with radars during the Second World War. During the First World War the majority of fighting was either on land or at sea. Aircraft were used, but were very limited. The Second World War used a combination of sea vessels, aircraft, and infantry to overcome both the Nazi Germans and the Imperialist Japanese.
The main conflict between the allied forces during World War I was the problem of working together. The British and French argued for control and both of them wanted to control the United States once it entered into the conflict. The Second World War was fought with the allied forces working together and combining forces without hesitation in order to defeat the evil threats of the world. The combined firepower of the all allied forces is what leads to the free world winning the outcome of the War
Similarities: In both wars Germany was the main aggressor. The alliances in both wars were practically the same in that it was Germany and Austria-Hungary vs. US, Britian, and France. before both wars the US tryed staying neutral but always ended up siding with the Allies. Differences: In WWI Japan was on the side of the allies but then it was on the side of the Axis Powers in WWII. After learning our lesson from the first world war we passed neutrality acts at the breakout of the war to stay out of the war but they eventually failed. Another difference was the money spent on the wars. the US spent as much money on pre-war army buildups and munition buildups than it had on the whole WWI.
I agree with Karan's statement that the technological advances in WWII were much greater than in WWI.The Second World War produced well built tanks, aircraft for bombing, as well as the atomic bomb.
I somewhat agree with tinkerbell09 and midgetsxrulexthexworld91's statement that Germany is to blame for the start of both wars. The First World War was started out as an offensive tactic by the Germans that turned into a defensive strategy. However, i think the start of the Second World War involves not only Germany, but also the Fascism in Italy and the regional takeover in Japan.
There were many similarities and differences between both of the World Wars.
Of the similarities, it was known that the United States was to steer clear of intervention and stay neutral, although in both cases it was ultimately dragged into war. The United States' position basically started from neutral to a helper nation then to joining in the actual wars. Other similarities the war had was the fact that the same countries participated against one another. I have to agree with lilchris about the establishments of the national peace making organizations as well as the acts that were enacted in order to draft soldiers to participate in the war.
Of the differences, the wars used two different strategies in fighting. One strategy used in WWI was trench warfare, while in WWII the strategy used was called total war. Another difference was that in WWI the United States was dragged into the war through Germany's unrestricted submarine attacks, while in WWII the United States was dragged into the war through Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
Both World War I and II were similar and yet different in many aspects.
For one, the axis and allies were relatively the same in both wars with the exception of the Japanese switching to the axis in WWII.
In addition, WWI was known for slow moving trench warfare while WWII was a more technologically advanced war with Germany implying the Blitzkrieg. Also, the use of the atomic bomb was significant in WWII.
The Holocaust was another difference between the two with the mass genocide of millions of Jews by Hitler and his Nazis in WWII.
Also, in both instances, the United States had kept up an isolationist policy but eventually joined the war efforts after being provoked into the conflict.
As far as foreign policy, the end of WWI saw the creation of the League of Nations. This was obviously a stupid thing cause it didnt work and was one of the reasons for WWII. The resolution of WWII saw much better cooperation amongst nations with the formation of the United Nations which the United States joined and which has proved to be an effective alliance.
Both wars, although started for different reasons, changed the course of the world and led to changes in foreign relations and policy.
World War I and World War II have a few similarities in common. Both of the wars were world wars taking place and affecting people all over the world. After the war, the impact was tragic due to the loss of millions of people from each war. Before the United States became involved in either World War I or World War II, it tried to remain isolated from foreign affairs. The public had to be persuaded into joining the war by events impacting Americans (submarine warfare and Pearl Harbor). During the war, women became more involved in the workplace filling in spots men left to join the war in Europe. Similarities between World War I and World War II were few.
Many differences in foreign policy and society existed between World War I and World War II. War War I had been more supported by the public than the Second Great War. The public had just seen the effectiveness of new weapons and strategies on the battlefields in World War I which resulted in the deaths of millions of people. It was not as easy to sway pubic opinion into joining the war on the allies side as it had been during World War I by President Wilson. President Roosevelt tired to rally support for the war in Europe but could not gain the support until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The direct attack on US soil caused many people to change their opinion to joining World War II. The publics opinion went hand in hand with the policies put forth by Washington. Policies during World War II were geared more toward isolationist and neutrality more so than during World War I. The Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936, and 1937 were all passed to prevent US intervention in the warfare. Attempts made by Roosevelt to join the war in his "quarantine" speech had a negative reaction by the American people. In all, several differences were apparent between the two world wars.
i agree with brownie-pants regarding the fact that the United States had isolationist policies before WWI to try and stay out of the conflict which eventually failed leading to US's entry into war.
I also agree with lilchris that the peace treaties of WWII were more successful than those enacted in WWI.
Neutrality Warnings to Germany to stop (unrestricted sub. warfare in WWI and acts of aggression in WWII) U.S. was in a state of depression U.S. became prosperous War Boards The "nations" on each "team"
Differences:
Neutrality Acts 1935, 1936, and 1937 (WWII) Trench Warfare (WWII) Radio (WWII) Total isolationism (WWII) Japan's involvement (WWII) Air Raids (WWII) Threw Dollar Diplomacy out the door (WWII) Communism installed in Soviet Union (WWII) Atomic Bombs (WWII) Japanese Internment camps (WWII) Greed from bankers and arms manufacturer spurred the war (WWI) Peacetime Draft (WWII)
I agree with kobe17's post about the fact that the presence of new technology is on the list of differences. The use of new technology allowed for more "efficient" (cruel to say that word...) killing of the opposite enemy. A staggering statistic supporting this is the trench warfares that pretty much ended up in stalemated gun fight. Chemical weapons as well as tanks, planes, and flame thrower all made the war more difficult to win as both sides had around the same technology.
I have to disagree with mondile's use of "tyrant" for Lenin and Stalin. As discussed in one of your lectures, when times are hard, people start to listen. They will listen to lunatic and conform to it. They will embrace those as they think it will save them. This was apparent in the United States when Huey Long ran against Roosevelt in the 1932 Election when he proposed a Share the Wealth idea of taking the top 5% of the wealthiest people and distributing it among the people, an idea that would be batted down immediately if it were not for the Great Depression. Same thing applied in Russia except that it actually happened.
I must disagree with CJ on the fact that both wars were in response to German fear of Russian imperial expansion. The First World War was fought for the control of sea routes whereas the Second World War was a battle against fascism and the Japanese empire.
I agree with Sam that the submarine warfare and the Pearl Harbor attack pressured the United States to join the European war.
Similarities: Neutrality had been set at one point of both WWI and WWII, Germany was one the opposing side and Britain was an allied, Women took jobs that were left by men joining the war.
Differences: In WWII neutrality was kept for a longer period of time, Hitler was expanding, Germany allied with Soviet Union, Communism and Fascism were allies, WWII war was unavoidable, Japan Italy and Germany had were axis power in WWII, Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor, "cash and carry", Neutrality was broken little by little with lend lease act, atlantic charter, and shoot on sight on WWII, Japanese credit was frozen in WWII, Japanese were sent to internment camps, Hitler ordered the internment of Jews.
Both WW I and WW II had similarities in the neutrality that was being sustained by the U.S. During both wars, the U.S. wanted to maintain its neutrality instead of intervening in the European crisis. Another similarity is that Germany was one of the main reasons that provoked the war. Also the Allies consisted of Great Britain, France, Russia, and the U.S all fighting against Germany. In both wars the U.S. tried to stay neutral, and then helped the Allies, and finally it joined the war as part of the Allies. And both time the U.S. was provoked into joining the war because of WW I: German unrestricted Submarine Warfare and in WW II: Attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan. Differences were that during WW II the U.S. was totally determined not to get into economic issues with any belligerent nations. Such as their “cash and carry” policy designed so that any ammunition or any help it was to give would be paid immediately and not debts would come of it. Later it had to do the Lend-Lease Bill in order to help out Britain even more, but the U.S. was determined not do repeat what had happened in WW I. Another difference was Japans stance on both wars. In WW I Japan joined the Allies in order to stop Germany, while in WW II it became part of the Axis Powers along with Germany and Italy. And the provocation for the U.S. to join the war WW I: German unrestricted Submarine Warfare and in WW II: Attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan.
i agree with browniepants for the comment on the US being provoked into the war and with kobe17 that during WW II there were more technological advances than those that had been during WW I.
some similarities that i found were that the U.S. proclaimed neutrality because they didnt want to get involved in any foreign affairs.we were also economically tied to Great Britain, we supplied them with weapons in both wars, and they helped our economy prosper. i also found that despite our neutrality proclamations, germany still provoked us into entering the war. in WWI they used submarine warfare to break us. and in WWII they attempted to use submarine warfare, but failed due to the Battle of the Atlantic. they then used one of their allies, japan, to attack our nation, pearl harbor. that attack entered us into the war, again by force. in WWI, we were also semi-forced into the war. germany kept using submarine warfare, and we had to take action after they disregarded our first warning. we also had a Selective Service Act in both wars. i found differences between our neutrality proclamations. when Roosevelt came up with the Neutrality Acts, he had 3 parts to it. one for each year from 1935-1937. each one stating that we wouldnt have any involvement with any countries involved in the war. eventually he put aside the acts and we continued to help out Britain. i agree with Brownie pants, both wars were fought to stop germany from expanding.
p.s. this is kassondra mr. wise. period 3. and my thoughts may be a little jumbled sorry! im soooooo tired. ill come back later and add more. bye.
WWI: -Woodrow Wilson was president -"war to end all wars" and "making the world safe for democracy" -U.S first stuck to neutrality -Tried EVERYTHING to stay out of declaring and entering war -provoked into war by German unrestricted submarine warfare -Big Four against Germany and Germany's supporters -invention of submarines and machine guns (made into a trench war until U.S intervention) -Wilson's 14 points -League of Nations (failure) -U.S help played big part in ending the war
WWII: -FDR was president -World was basically in a state of depression -Germany, Italy, and Japan (AXIS) was causing trouble-Nazis, fascism, etc. -U.S again tries to stay neutral -Provoked into War by Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor -Neutral country that was helping a belligerant nation -Mainly the same group of nations at war as in the first war -Japan was involved in this world war -Neutrality Acts (pretty much a joke since roosevelt choose to ignore a few) -technology was more advanced -"good neighbor" policy -American intervention helped to end the war -United Nations was formed
Both these wars were the same in essence and shared many similarities. There were few differences and in truth, the second world war was like a continuation of the first war with minor adjustments.
I agree with weeshabangxd's ideas on what may have triggered the starts of the two world wars.
It seems like many people see the mutual detail that the start of these two world wars begin with neutrality and then provacation and so on. My thought on how the second war was a continuation of the first one is backed up by all the people who commented on how the world powers on each side stayed basically the same ^-^ so i agree with everyone who states that the sides didn't drastically change.
Similarities: A huge similarity between both wars was the U.S.'s determination to remain neutral. In both wars, the U.S. tried to keep Neutrality through negotiation with the problematic countries (mainly Germany), and several policies. The ending result in both was that the U.S. was provoked into joining the war (Pearl Harbor and Germany's Submarine Warfare).
In World War II, Japan switched over to the Axis powers with their new sense of aggression. Within World War II, the technology was highly sophisticated compared to that of WWI because in WWII there was use of airplanes, tanks, radars, sonars...etc. The trench warfare proved very slow compared to the constant attacks of air raids and other strategies in WWII. Both wars' ends resulted in a desire for cooperation between the countries. While the League of Nations ended in failure, the United Nations created an effective alliance still valid today.
Both WWI and WWII have many similarities even though they were mainly fought for different purposes and goals. Both of the world wars fought against Germany in which Germany was defeated in both of the wars. Both wars caused major changes in the politics and makeup of Europe. Also, both inspired the creation of international institutions to maintain peace among the nations such as the League of Nations and the United Nations. In both world wars, the US tried to avoid intervening with the nations involved by staying neutral and following the concept of isolationism.
Along with the similarities come the differences such as WWI was fought mainly in the West whereas WWII was fought mainly in the East. France played a major role in WWI, but was quickly defeated in WWII. Also, WWII hit the civilian populations of Europe much harder than WWII. Unlike the rejection of the League of Nations following WWI, Congress readily accepted the peacekeeping organization, the United Nations, immediately after WWII. WWI was fought mainly for the control of sea routes whereas WWII was a battle that was fought against fascism in Germany. In WWI, the US was provoked into declaring war because German unrestricted submarine warfare. In contrast, the US was provoked into joining WWII because of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I agree with kobe17 that in both of the world wars, U.S. tried to remain neutral. The positive outcome of the decision to avoid intervening with the nations involved, specifically with Britain, led it to come out of the war unscarred while other nations suffered extensive damage from the war.
I also agree with raiders10 that WWII was more threatening because of the use of nuclear weapons such as the atomic bomb in Japan.
There were many similarities between the two world wars. The first one that comes to mind is that both times the US wanted to stay neutral and it failed. Another is that most of the same countries fought in both wars on the same sides they fought in the first world war, they also did in the second but the only difference was that Japan came in and sided with the Axis Powers in WWII. Another thing in common between both wars is that Germany seemed to be the main culprit.
The differences that I can think of is that the first world war started due to the assassination of that austrian dude Archduke Ferdinand*. The fighting in sea between germany and the other counries and Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare is also another difference. In WWII, Japan had swiched sides to the Central powers with Germany and the others. And the attack of Pearl Harbor was a huge thing that took place and resulted in the US's enterence into the war.
brownie pants: i agree with him/her that both of the wars are memorable because of their similarities and differences.
Kobe17: i agree with kerny that there were many technological improvements made during WWII than WWI.
-better gime extra credit mister wise!! i crashed right after school or else i woulda done earlier but still... you better! >:(
Some of the similarities would have to be the agreement of seeing US as a neutral nation. Also Germany’s aggression was the main cause for the start of both wars. In both of the wars they started out with remaining neutral, but in the end they ended up in the war. Also, the US provided support to both sides but later went towards UK and French. Some of the differences would be that Italy was a part of the allies in WW1. Their peace treaties also differed in which world war two peace treaty was geared towards punishing Germany, and the agreements in Yalta were more inclined by creating a long-lasting peace agreement. Another difference would be the trading of japan. Japan was on the allied side in WWI and the german side in WWII
Similarities: -Germany is the cause of both wars. -US starts off as a neutral nation, but later on in both wars joins in on the Allies' side. -Almost all the same nations were on the same side in both wars. -Both wars took a major turn once the US joined in. -Trench warfare
Differences (WWI): -US stayed out of the war because it didn't want to be involved in European affairs -US later joins war because of Germany breaks its promises of non-aggression to neutral nations -Japan was on Allied side.
Differences (WWII): -US passes Neutrality Acts to officially proclaim their neutrality. -Japan is part of Axis Powers. -Holocaust -More sophisticated technology.
kobe17 I agree that WWI caused more fear and havoc among the public in WWII.
brownie-pants I agree that the Neutrality Acts in WWII shows how the US was determined more than ever to stay out of European affairs, espcially after seeing the effects of WWI.
The similarites between WWI and WWII majorly dealt with Germany and Americas role in it. Germany in both cases was a major factor in causing both wars and played one of the biggest roles in the wars. Also, the allies in WWII were similar to WWI for a part of the duration of the war when it included the UK, America, France, and Russia against Germany. America's neutrality was also similar in both cases but we eventually ended up fighting to back up europe from complete destruction.
Differences included the type of war during the time periods. The first world war was primarily trench warfare which had little positive effects while the second world was delt with numerous naval, submarine, tank, and land battles. Japans role in WWII was different since Japan didn't really play a role in WWI. Also, technology changed a lot of things with the devolopment of the atomic bomb which helped end the war with Japan. Lastly, the holocaust created millions of deaths and WWII was far more deadly then the first one.
There were numerous similarities and differences between WWI and WWII.
The similarities include the Red Scare, which panicked many Americans after WWI, and again after WWII, where the U.S. and the Soviet Union were the two powers remaining. Another similarity included the beligerrant nation of Germany, being the aggressor, as they had been during WWI. The United States was driven to fight in both wars through attacks on the United States. The United States also maintained isolationism in both wars to a certain extent.
Some of the differences include the policy toward the Allied, which was much more friendly in WWII, with the Lend-Lease Act that clearly favored the Allied Powers. Another difference was the techonology, it was much more improved in WWII compared to WWI.
World War 1 and World War 2 had similarities and differnces, some similarities was that both were global military conflicts. Germany was involved in both and at the end they ended with treaties. Like first war ended with the Treaty of Versailles made Germany sign. After the Second war they made the United Nations.
Differences were that World War 2over 40 million casulties resulted about 20 million deaths. All of the central power lost territory and many new nations were created. U.S also wanted to stay in neautrality. World War 2 conflicts split the majority of the world's nations the Allies and Axis power. They had complete activation of a nations economic industrial. They had the attack of the Pearl Harbor. The Allies won which made U.S be seen an one of the two leading superpowers.
I agree with with tinkerbell09 that Germany was the cause of the first war because of the submarine warfare. If you keep attacking you are going to fight back.
I agree with The next black billionare because Pearl Harbor was a major attack.
Similarities WWI and WWII -large scale war involving many nations -Allies- France, Britain, US, Russia -Germany main adversary -The idea of neutrality was adopted by the US, but never actually fulfilled -World peace organization: League of Nations/ United Nation -Both wars had new weapons and technology [WWI- submarines, flamethrowers/ WWII- atomic bomb] - US fear or racism against a certain group: communists [WWI] and Japanese [WWII] -negative propaganda -Germany is blamed for everything
Differences WWI and WWII - Why US got involved -WWI -Germany sinking US ships -Zimmerman’s Telegraph -WWII -Pearl Harbor -Central powers: Germany, Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary [WWI] -Axis powers: Spain, Germany, Japan [WWII] -Leaders -WWI -Wilson [US] -WWII -Roosevelt [US] -Truman[US] -Stalin [USSR] -Churchill [Britain] -Hitler [Germany] -Mussolini [Spain] -Warfare -WWI -Trench -Submarine -WWII -Naval [ships] -Airplanes -United Nations was successful and the League of Nations was not -Yalta Conference was also successful and Wilson’s Fourteen Points did not make much of an impact -WWI led to the world Great Depression -WWII had the Holocaust, Hitler’s attempt to wipe out all the Jews in Europe -Location -WWI -Europe -WWII -Europe -Africa -Pacific Ocean -WWI was called “the war to end all wars”
I have to agree with lauren13 when she says that the main reason why the US was involved in the First World War was because of the Zimmerman’s Telegraph and not the sinking of the submarines.
I have to disagree with \\X// ] |_ 1 [ /\ (V) when this person states that the US favored both sides in the beginning because the second world war the US was only helping out the Allies even though they were “neutral”, they never supported Germany.
There are multiple similarities and differences between World War I and World War II.
Similarities: First, Russia, Britain, and U.S.(the allies) which fought against Germany, Italy, and Japan. In both world wars the plan was to stop the expansion of Germany. Also, in both world wars the U.S. wanted to remain neutral and wanted isolation from the war, but eventually got into both of them on the allies' side to stop the expansion of Germany.
Differences:
The difference between the two wars was that in World War II, the U.S. decided to not be neutral anymore because Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, which led to America entering the war. President Harry S. Truman made the decision to go along with the Manhattan Project which was to drop atomic bombs(A-Bombs) on two of Japan's cities, Hiroshima and Nagaskai.
I also agree with tinkerbell09 because I too believe Germany was the major cause of both world wars. Especially in World War II with the Nazis and Hitler.
WWI vs. WWI -Allied powers (G.B, France, Russia) In World War II, the allied powers included the big three. -Central powers (Germany, Austria Hungary, Ottoman Empire)In World War II, the Axis Powers included Germany, Japan, Italy who were under the influence of Fascism and Aggressive militarism. - Seizure of ships by British and Germany unrestricted submarine warfare was one of the main factors that contributed to US defiance of neutrality and entrance in war. In World War II, he attack at Pearl Harbor was the most extreme cause of US involvement. - U.s involuntarily supported Allied powers. In Both wars the U.S involuntarily supported the Allied powers, especially Great Britain. Justification of this came from the threat that Germany and the Axis powers posed to National Security. - U.S business prospered during the war. In both Wars, the US economy prospered exceedingly through arms and supplies. However, the main difference is that in WWI, the US economy was devastated and suffered extreme depression, where in WWII the end of the war brought an escape from depression. -Opposition to the war came from Populists, Progressives, and Socialists. In WWII almost all American feared US involvement in the war. The Nye Committee, for instance, concluded that WWI was a war that served the greed of bankers and arms manufacturers. -Reason Wilson proposed to Congress for war was the Zimmerman Telegram which is also corespondent to US interception and decoding of Japanese messages. -A major similarity was the Selective Service Acts. In WWI these acts called upon US citizens to be drafted into war, however in WWI a peacetime draft was enacted. -The Espionage and sedition Acts of WWI corresponded to Japanese fears and racism that erupted in WWII. After WWI, the case of Schenck vs. US declared these acts unconstitutional as did the case of Korematsu vs. U.S -During WWI, the US took loans and enforced taxes to raise money, as did in WWII. - African Americans in both wars faced segregation and discrimination, however, in WWI, organizations such as the NAACP and CORE were formed to advocate African American rights. In the case, Smith vs. Allwright, the US made it illegal to deny Blacks membership in political parties which acted as a small step toward equality. -The War ended in WWI with the Treaty of Versailles however, it was never formally ratified and accepted. However, the meeting in Yalta in WWI ended the war and introduced the United Nations. -with the end of WWI the United States became the most powerful and prosperous nation in the world. Where, in WWI the US economy fell into major economic hardship.
I agree with benaa15 when she says that both Wars had an impact on the Use of weapons. In WWI he submarine was introduced and in WWII Atomic bombs where introduced. However, A-Bomb, although posed defeat over Japan and surrender of the Axis powers, introduced more than a threat to National Security in later years.
I disagree with Justine when she says that "U.S. decided to not be neutral anymore because Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor" was a difference. I think the main similarity was the US defiance of neutrality and how in both wars, the US was pulled in by the taunting of other nations. I would say it was a difference that the US decided not to be neutral anymore.
Similarities of the war begin with the United States and their desire to remain neutral from the very start of both world wars. The only difference was that in the beginning of WWII, they turned to the method of trying to appease other nations and foster trust and help. However, due to goals of other nations (Germany and the Nazi regime) along with the aggression of Japan (their push to try and seek more resources in other nations), it was inevitable through means of neutrality that war would break out. For the most part, nations that competed in this war were about the same few that had been present.
The method of waging war in WWII and WWI was far from similar. The technology that was introduced in the time of WWII began with the machine gun. It proved to be a massive cause of casualties. The idea of fighting battles in long mazes of trenches did not help at all. War was dragged longer than usual and the conditions inside trenches served to also cause many casualties. The use of an air force became prominent as well since Germany demonstrated that air raids with bombs proved to be very effective at striking a nation's resources and military bases. The development of the atomic bomb was a humongous evolution in the history of warfare. Along with the atomic bomb, tanks became a necessity to any nation that wanted an edge on the ground. Many of the differences in WWII were fueled as consequences of the Great Depression and also WWI. Japan was forced to begin their aggressive military acts onto Manchuria and China to attain resources while the Allied forces seeked to appease nearby nations in hopes of settling conflict. The Axis powers only fostered more nationalism through fascism, all pushing towards WWII. In the end, the UN was established to contrast from the League of Nations, this time proving far more effective as it is still in effect today, ensuring as much world peace as possible.
In response to viaeenie, I have to agree that WWII was also different in the fact that the civilian population was pulled into the war far more as compared to WWI. Air raids is an example. Another example would be the Holocaust and the camps for Japanese in the U.S.
I agree with righetousprofet that the attack on Pearl Harbor was what set in motion the desire to go into war by the U.S., as compared to the events that pulled the U.S. into WWI.
Similarities: -Germany was America’s main enemy -Both wars influenced America greatly by taking a step back from being an isolationist nation -The countries from the allied and axis sides were mainly the same, except for Japan’s alliance with the axis in WWI -The end of the wars helped boost the American economy -Women’s role in the work force during both wars increased dramatically -Minorities, especially African Americans, served in both war experiencing segregation and discrimination
Differences: WWI -Was triggered by Germany’s consistent submarine warfare -Failure of League of Nations which caused WWII -Set in Europe -Trench warfare
WWII -Was triggered by Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor -Resulted in an effective coalition of countries: United Nations -Set not only in Europe, but also in the Pacific -Scapegoat was common: the Japanese, the Holocaust -Total war -The Neutrality Acts passed by FDR demonstrates a more reluctant attitude towards joining the war than it did in WWI
PS to Mr. Wise, I remembered you tell Ara and me that we didn’t have to respond to other people’s comments, so hopefully you won’t mark me down for not responding.
there were many similarities and differences between WWI and WWII. there similarities were that the two side were almost the same in WWI it was: Russia, Britain, and the U.S. against Germany and Italy in WWII it was Britain, U.S. and France against Germany, Italy, and Japan. in both of the wars the U.S. tried to stay neutral but still got dragged in to both wars. After WWI we went through the great depression but during WWII we tried t conserve as much as we could because conservation was encouraged. Another difference was that WWI was a slow war, whereas, WWII was a destructive and modern war. a In conclusion WWI and WWII were similar in many ways. I agree with Kobe17 in that the two sides were almost the same and that the U.S. tried to stay neutral in both wars.
Some similarities between WWI and WWII were that Germany was the main start for both wars. Another similarity was that the US did not want to enter the wars but after being provoked they eventually gave in. Some differneces include that WWII was a war of movement as opposed to WWI being a war fought mostly in the trenches. They wa salso mush more technology during WWII icluding the atomic bomb which was dropped in Japan and ended the war. During WWII there was much emphasis on the behalf of Roosevelt to remain neutral. He issued three neutrality acts but he evenually ened them by starting the Lend-Lease Act.
I agree with kobe17 saying that the technology was a key difference between the wars. I also agree with tinkerbell09 saying that Germany was the main cause of both wars.
There had been numerous similarities and differenced between the two wars WWI and WWII. Such similarities as many of the same countries in the war and even on almost the same sides. Russia, Britain, and the U.S. against Germany & Italy although it in the end switched to the Allies side on both occasions. Differences, such as Japan being on US side in WWI and Germany's side in WWII. Both wars also differed in there strategic battles mainly in WWII the necessity of obtaining and controlling both the European theatre and Pacific Theatre. Unlike the first World War when America joined in order to "keep the world safe for democracy" in WWII America had declared war on Japan due to the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Also advancements in technology and war arsenals greatly differed in the wars. Use of the atomic bomb, airplanes, tanks, etc...
I agree with Kobe17 (koran) that in WWI Roosevelt had slowly through his foreign policies made his way into the war. I agree with lil Chris that another difference in the war is the creation of an international peace keeping organization in WWI the unsuccessful League of Nations and in WWII the United Nations.
Similarities: *desire to remain neutral initially *U.S. joined on side of Britain and France and was against Germany *women took the place of males in many industrial jobs *both resulted in a world peace-keeping organization *both ended up in German defeat and pay *both involved "Selective Service" Acts WWI(1917), WWII(1940) *both involved an influx in Mexican immigrants *U.S. gave loans to Britain and France in WWI as well as WWII *Propaganda was eminent Differences: *Japan was involved in WWII *Russia was on Germany's side in WWII *Germany actually WAS the one to blame in WWII *WWII involved harsher conditions, a brutal genocide, and more advanced technology than WWI *Women who took jobs in WWII stuck with them after the war *WWII was after a terrible economic depression and was the reason for U.S. emergence out of the depression *U.S. actually joined the peace-keeping organization that was proposed after WWII *the U.S. was actually attacked during WWII in its own territory (Pearl Harbor) *WWII had more dire results in the area of racism: Japanese Americans were segregated and put into internment camps on account of Exective Order 9066 *
I disagree with Brownie-pants on her/his statement that both wars were fought to stop German expansion, as WWI was a result of the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand. It was also a result of the complicated web of alliances between European nations.
I agree with luoyuejia on his/her statement that technology was much more advanced during WWII than in WWI and his/her elaboration on the different technologies of the two wars.
Both World Wars were different and similiar from each other on various things.
Similarities: The U.S fought with Britain on both of the wars. The u.s also fought against germany for whatever the reason was in both wars. on both of the wars the women had to take over the mens jobs when they work and so did the african americans but when the soldiers returned they had to give them back their jobs. Also the african americans fought in seperate troops, they were segregated.
Differences: In the first war it was harder to get troops and american people to support the war while in the second war the people were more supported. In the first war the u.s got involved because of the constant german submarine warfare on the american ships while in the second war american got involved becuase of the japanese attack on pearl harbor which angered the u.s.
I AGREE WITH MARANDA ON THE FACT THAT THE US TRIED TO REMAIN NEUTRAL IN THE WARS BUT IN THE END THEY HAD TO JOIN OR DIE.
SECONDLY I AGREE WITH tinkerbell09 THAT GERMANY WAS THE MAJOR CAUSE OF BOTH WARS BECUASE IN BOTH WARS THEY KEPT FIGHTING WITH EVERYONE AND IN THE SECOND WAR GERMANY TOOK OVER POLAND AND THAT SHOWED THAT THEY DIDNT HAVE A LIMIT.

There were many similarities and differences between the two world wars. The similarities would include the United States' foreign policy on neutrality and isolationism ( which the U.S. then eventually gets dragged into both wars), the same countries that were on the allied forces still fought together against Germany, and new technology for warfare was introduced ( such as submarines, flamethrowers, poison gas, etc for WWI and the a-bomb for WWII). Germany was blamed for both wars and neither war was fought on U.S. ground. There were a couple differences. The cause of the U.S.'s inclusion of the wars were different because in WWI Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare dragged U.S. into war while in WWII the bombing of Pearl Harbor dragged U.S. into war. In world war I, the war was ended by the signing of the treaty of versailles while WWII ended when U.S bombed nagasaki and hiroshima with the a-bomb. Another difference was that the US senate quickly accepted to be a part of the UN at the end of WWII while back in WWI, the US denied to be a part of the league of nations.
I disaggree with brownie-parts saying that both wars were to stop German Expansion. The first world war occurred because of the assasination of Austria's Franz Ferdinand and because Germany was Austria's ally, Germany declared war against Serbia and all of its allies. Germany's unrestricted submarine warefare was not due to expansionist ideas but rather to eliminate any naval threat. WWII is when Germany became entirely expansionist.
I also disagree with kobe17, although the types of weapons introduced are different, the introduction of new technology altogether makes the two wars similar because the introduction of new technology changed the way each war fought.
Similarites: Both wars included the same countries on either sides: U.S, Russia, and Britian against Germany. As Kobe17 mentioned, Italy sided with Germany in both wars but eventually swiched to the Allied powers. Another main similarity, was the U.S's initial plan for neutrality.
Differences: Unlike WWI, Japan was heavily involved in WWII and allied with Germany. Additionally, unlike WWI, which was a war of trench warfare and slow destruction, WWII was a war of quicker movement. A huge diffence between the wars, was the advancement of technology. WWII included airplanes, bombers, tanks, radios, and more. Foreign policies were another key difference between the wars. During WWII, Roosevelt passed the Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936, and 1937 to limit the interaction between U.S citizens and belligerent nations. For instance, the Neutrality Acts prohibited trade, loans, and credits to belligerents as well as the banning of travel on belligerent vessels. Another main diffence between the wars, was the presence of the HOlocaust in WWII.
The First World War, or "Great War", as it was known, began the transformation of the world, but it took the Second World War to finish it. While both world wars involved many of the same combatants there were many more differences than similarities.
Similarities (: -Germany was America’s main enemy -The public had to be persuaded into joining the war by events impacting Americans -submarine warfare -Pearl Harbor -Both wars influenced America greatly by taking a step back from being an isolationist nation -Women’s role in the work force during both wars increased dramatically -goal was to remian neutral(failing both times)
Differences (: -During WW II the U.S. was totally determined not to get into economic issues with any belligerent nations. -“cash and carry” policy -Later it had to do the Lend-Lease Bill in order to help out Britain even more -U.S. was determined not do repeat what had happened in WWI. - The technology in WWII was way more advanced than in WWI - Japan in the first world war was part of the allies but in the second world war it became one of the axis powers -War War I had been more supported by the public than the Second Great War. - US passes Neutrality Acts to officially proclaim their neutrality in WWII
I agree with Brittney Chavez when she says that in both war U.S. tried to remain neutral, practiced isolationism.(neutral acts) Also i agree withh mikeb when he says that a difference was the techonology, it was much more improved in WWII compared to WWI.
Similarities: - World War I and World War II were very similar in foreign policy and attempting international peace corporations like the League of Nations and the United Nations respectively. - The desire for neutrality is a similar factor in a way that the United States advocated for noninterventionlism regarding the fighting in the war. - Within both Wars the U.S. also prepared military troops through the Selective Service Act and National Defense Act. - In World War I, the Sussex Pledge was proposed in hopes of preventing U.S. interventions. - In WWII, U.S. used appeasement and the Stimson Doctrine to prevent intervention. - Both wars had citizens that were against U.S. intervention of the war, such as Populist, Progressives, and Socialist within WWI and Americas First Committee within WWI. Differences: - Peace treaties in which WWI peace treaty was geared towards punishing Germany, whereas the agreements in the Yalta conference were more influenced by creating a long-lasting peace. - Within the U.S. society and WWI the U.S. public media promoted U.S. interventions where as the within WWII America First Committee demoted U.S. interventions. Direct attack on Pearl Harbor caused intervention - United States policies towards creating peace treaty were more accepted within WWII than during the Treaty of Versailles after WWI.
I agree with LIL CHRIS in saying that foreign policy and neutrality were similarities between WWI and WWII. However, i would have to disagree with brownie pants because i do not believe that the wars were fought for the prevention of Germany expanstion. I believe that the first world war's attacks targeting Germany was because of the major threat the Germany posed to the US because of the unrestricted submarine warfare. I do not believe that Germany expansion could have been prominently effective using naval tactics in the first place anyways.
Both World War 1 and World War 2 were of the utmost important in the history of the world. While each are of different times they both shared commonalities and differences.
The similarities of the wars were that Germany was the Aggressor of the Wars, in other words they provoked the counter attacks. Another is that the original Allied and Axis Powers were the nearly the same in both wars. The Allied Powers in WW1 were made up of the U.S, Britian, France, and Russia. Yet in WW2 they gained the support of Italy as well as in WW1. A difference was that in WW2 the Japanese Empire switched to aid Germany. In both cases that U.S tried to remain neutral at the start of both wars, yet their foriegn policies on trade encouraged the Germans to use unrestricted submarine warfare upon their merchant ships. As well as their policy against the Japanese take over of the Chinese country of Manchura. This resulted in the U.S cutting off the Japanese oil supply causing the attack on Pearl Harbor. In both wars the Axies powers were fearful of the U.S presence in the war yet their attacks proved to be why the U.S eventually entered on the side of the Allied Powers.
Also in both wars during the signing of Peace Treaties the League of Nations was formed in WW1 then in WW2 the United Nations was formed. The League of Nations ended up being unsuccessful due to the U.S not being apart of it. After WW2 the U.N was formed in order to stop future wars, this proved to be successful and is still effective today.
Also in WW2 the U.S was the first country to effectively create and us the Atomic Bomb which they dropped on two Japanese cities when the Japanese refused to surrender.
On the home front during WW1 many Americans were opposed to the entrance in to the war as was president Wilson who's policies fought to maintain peace with Germany and Britian, due to trade issues, and keep America neutral. Although Americans felt sentiment toward Germans due to the submarine warfare they still sought to remain nuetral. During WW1 the U.S became a creditor nation to the waring countries of Europe and countinued to apply the "good neighbor" policy to Latin America. During this time the U.S was prosperous yet after the War the Great Depression hit and the economy began to rise once more only after the beginning of WW2.
Along with the 2nd world war came the Holocaust in which the mass genocide of over 6 million Jews took place, where as the 1st world war did not.

The differances are that Japan was not part of the Allies in WWII, the U.S. tried to make friends with Latin America, and after the war U.S. joined the United Nations (unlike after WWI when the U.S. didn't join The League Of Nations.)
I agree with kobe17 with the two sides were almost identical in both wars.
I also agree with brownie-pants that the U.S. was provoked into entering both wars.

I agree with kobe17 when he says the technological advances in WWII were much greater than in WWI.
I also agreee with midgetsxrulexthexworld91 when they say that Germany is to blame for the start of both wars.
-Bletcher, Period 3
Similarities
-Start out with US as a neutral nation
-US provided support to both sides but later sway towards UK and French side, also known as the Allied Powers
-Germany's Aggression starts both wars
-Nations on both sides of the conflict generally stayed the same
Differences - WWI
-US stayed out of the war because it didn't want to be involved in European affairs
-US joins war because of Germany's broken promises of non-aggression to neutral nations
-Italy was part of allies in WWI
-Russia leaves the war in WWI
Differences - WWII
-US society starts swaying to Alliance side because of continued trade with Britain, through acts such as Cash and Carry, and Lend-Lease Act
-Japan and Italy join the Central/Axis powers
-US passes Neutrality Acts to declare neutrality
-Prelude to Cold War, a potential WWIII
Similarities of WWI and WWII
-Germany started them
-The U.S. wanted to remain neutral
-Both involved the same countries
Differences in WWI
-This war was started because of the submarine warfare that Germany had. But actually it started after Zimmerman Telegram because from there the Americans felt that Germany wanted war.
Differences in WWII
-This was was started because of the bombings at Pearl Harbor. So after the U.S. declared war with Japan, Germany and Italy joined in. They was alot more isolationism, and the US still wanted to stay neutral. They passed Neutrality Acts and also tried to stay out of many things. However it was hard with the fascism going on it Germany and Italy.
I agree with kobe17 that the difference that wars had was the technogoly, since WWII was able to use the same weapons and in WWI but also more.
I also agree with the next black billionaire that the U.S. wanted to be neutral in both wars, but failed.
Wow it feels weird to do this for a second time, and lets get this little fact straight, don't trust Marcus to write down a URL.
And since it looks like alot less work, im just gonna copy \\X// ] |_ 1 [ /\ (V)'s style (wth?)
Similarities

I agree with both midgetsXruleXtheXworld91 and
brownie-pants about the opinion of the U.S. being provoked to enter both wars.
Similarities:
In both wars Germany was the main aggressor. The alliances in both wars were practically the same in that it was Germany and Austria-Hungary vs. US, Britian, and France. before both wars the US tryed staying neutral but always ended up siding with the Allies.
Differences:
In WWI Japan was on the side of the allies but then it was on the side of the Axis Powers in WWII.
Similarities:
Neutrality
Warnings to Germany to stop (unrestricted sub. warfare in WWI and acts of aggression in WWII)
U.S. was in a state of depression
U.S. became prosperous
War Boards
The "nations" on each "team"
Differences:
Neutrality Acts 1935, 1936, and 1937 (WWII)
Trench Warfare (WWII)
Radio (WWII)
Total isolationism (WWII)
Japan's involvement (WWII)
Air Raids (WWII)
Threw Dollar Diplomacy out the door (WWII)
Communism installed in Soviet Union
(WWII)
Atomic Bombs (WWII)
Japanese Internment camps (WWII)
Greed from bankers and arms manufacturer spurred the war (WWI)
Peacetime Draft (WWII)
And the provocation for the U.S. to join the war WW I: German unrestricted Submarine Warfare and in WW II: Attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan.
i agree with browniepants for the comment on the US being provoked into the war and with kobe17 that during WW II there were more technological advances than those that had been during WW I.
some similarities that i found were that the U.S. proclaimed neutrality because they didnt want to get involved in any foreign affairs.we were also economically tied to Great Britain, we supplied them with weapons in both wars, and they helped our economy prosper. i also found that despite our neutrality proclamations, germany still provoked us into entering the war. in WWI they used submarine warfare to break us. and in WWII they attempted to use submarine warfare, but failed due to the Battle of the Atlantic. they then used one of their allies, japan, to attack our nation, pearl harbor. that attack entered us into the war, again by force. in WWI, we were also semi-forced into the war. germany kept using submarine warfare, and we had to take action after they disregarded our first warning. we also had a Selective Service Act in both wars.
i found differences between our neutrality proclamations. when Roosevelt came up with the Neutrality Acts, he had 3 parts to it. one for each year from 1935-1937. each one stating that we wouldnt have any involvement with any countries involved in the war.
eventually he put aside the acts and we continued to help out Britain.
i agree with Brownie pants, both wars were fought to stop germany from expanding.
p.s. this is kassondra mr. wise.
period 3. and my thoughts may be a little jumbled sorry! im soooooo tired. ill come back later and add more. bye.
WWI:
-Woodrow Wilson was president
-"war to end all wars" and "making the world safe for democracy"
-U.S first stuck to neutrality
-Tried EVERYTHING to stay out of declaring and entering war
-provoked into war by German unrestricted submarine warfare
-Big Four against Germany and Germany's supporters
-invention of submarines and machine guns (made into a trench war until U.S intervention)
-Wilson's 14 points
-League of Nations (failure)
-U.S help played big part in ending the war
WWII:
-FDR was president
-World was basically in a state of depression
-Germany, Italy, and Japan (AXIS) was causing trouble-Nazis, fascism, etc.
-U.S again tries to stay neutral
-Provoked into War by Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor
-Neutral country that was helping a belligerant nation
-Mainly the same group of nations at war as in the first war
-Japan was involved in this world war
-Neutrality Acts (pretty much a joke since roosevelt choose to ignore a few)
-technology was more advanced
-"good neighbor" policy
-American intervention helped to end the war
-United Nations was formed
Both these wars were the same in essence and shared many similarities. There were few differences and in truth, the second world war was like a continuation of the first war with minor adjustments.
I agree with weeshabangxd's ideas on what may have triggered the starts of the two world wars.
It seems like many people see the mutual detail that the start of these two world wars begin with neutrality and then provacation and so on. My thought on how the second war was a continuation of the first one is backed up by all the people who commented on how the world powers on each side stayed basically the same ^-^ so i agree with everyone who states that the sides didn't drastically change.
Hey Mr. Wise this is Alan Nguyen: Period 1
Japan was on the allied side in WWI and the german side in WWII
i would have to agree with Maranda, because our list of similarities can compare.
also, i like the fact that Kobe17 included information on technology advances.
Similarities:
-Germany is the cause of both wars.
-US starts off as a neutral nation,
but later on in both wars joins in
on the Allies' side.
-Almost all the same nations were
on the same side in both wars.
-Both wars took a major turn once
the US joined in.
-Trench warfare
Differences (WWI):
-US stayed out of the war because
it didn't want to be involved in
European affairs
-US later joins war because of
Germany breaks its promises of
non-aggression to neutral nations
-Japan was on Allied side.
Differences (WWII):
-US passes Neutrality Acts to
officially proclaim their
neutrality.
-Japan is part of Axis Powers.
-Holocaust
-More sophisticated technology.
kobe17
I agree that WWI caused more fear and havoc among the public in WWII.
brownie-pants
I agree that the Neutrality Acts in WWII shows how the US was determined more than ever to stay out of European affairs, espcially after seeing the effects of WWI.
MR. WISE!!
UPDATE KASEY'S WEBGRADE POR FAVOR!! HER GRADES ARE SUFFERING BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT PUT IN HER LAST TWO TEST GRADES AND BLOGS YET!! Muchas gracias.
-Kasey
World War 1 and World War 2 had similarities and differnces, some
similarities was that both were global military conflicts.
Liseth PERIOD 2...*/*
Similarities WWI and WWII
-large scale war involving many nations
-Allies- France, Britain, US, Russia
-Germany main adversary
-The idea of neutrality was adopted by the US, but never actually fulfilled
-World peace organization: League of Nations/ United Nation
-Both wars had new weapons and technology [WWI- submarines, flamethrowers/ WWII- atomic bomb]
- US fear or racism against a certain group: communists [WWI] and Japanese [WWII]
-negative propaganda
-Germany is blamed for everything
Differences WWI and WWII
- Why US got involved
-WWI
-Germany sinking US ships
-Zimmerman’s Telegraph
-WWII
-Pearl Harbor
-Central powers: Germany, Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary [WWI]
-Axis powers: Spain, Germany, Japan [WWII]

-Warfare
-WWI
-Trench
-Submarine
-WWII
-Naval [ships]

-United Nations was successful and the League of Nations was not
-Yalta Conference was also successful and Wilson’s Fourteen Points did not make much of an impact
-WWI led to the world Great Depression
-WWII had the Holocaust, Hitler’s attempt to wipe out all the Jews in Europe
-Location
-WWI
-Europe
-WWII
-Europe
-Africa
-Pacific Ocean
-WWI was called “the war to end all wars”
I agree with veg_girl09 because the U.S. did want to stay neutral and stay out of the war, but was still dragged into it.
I also agree with tinkerbell09 because I too believe Germany was the major cause of both world wars. Especially in World War II with the Nazis and Hitler.
WWI vs. WWI
-Allied powers (G.B, France, Russia) In World War II, the allied powers included the big three.
-During WWI, the US took loans and enforced taxes to raise money, as did in WWII.
I agree with righetousprofet that the attack on Pearl Harbor was what set in motion the desire to go into war by the U.S., as compared to the events that pulled the U.S. into WWI.
Similarities:
-Germany was America’s main enemy
-Both wars influenced America greatly by taking a step back from being an isolationist nation
-The countries from the allied and axis sides were mainly the same, except for Japan’s alliance with the axis in WWI
-The end of the wars helped boost the American economy
-Women’s role in the work force during both wars increased dramatically
-Minorities, especially African Americans, served in both war experiencing segregation and discrimination
Differences:
WWI
-Was triggered by Germany’s consistent submarine warfare
-Failure of League of Nations which caused WWII
-Set in Europe
-Trench warfare
WWII
-Was triggered by Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor
-Resulted in an effective coalition of countries: United Nations
-Set not only in Europe, but also in the Pacific
-Scapegoat was common: the Japanese, the Holocaust
-Total war
-The Neutrality Acts passed by FDR demonstrates a more reluctant attitude towards joining the war than it did in WWI
PS to Mr. Wise,
I remembered you tell Ara and me that we didn’t have to respond to other people’s comments, so hopefully you won’t mark me down for not responding.
:)
there were many similarities and differences between WWI and WWII. there similarities were that the two side were almost the same in WWI it was: Russia, Britain, and the U.S. against Germany and Italy in WWII it was Britain, U.S. and France against Germany, Italy, and Japan. in both of the wars the U.S. tried to stay neutral but still got dragged in to both wars.

Similarities:
*desire to remain neutral initially
*U.S. joined on side of Britain and France and was against Germany
*women took the place of males in many industrial jobs
*both resulted in a world peace-keeping organization
*both ended up in German defeat and pay
*both involved "Selective Service" Acts WWI(1917), WWII(1940)
*both involved an influx in Mexican immigrants
*U.S. gave loans to Britain and France in WWI as well as WWII
*Propaganda was eminent
Differences:
*Japan was involved in WWII
*Russia was on Germany's side in WWII
*Germany actually WAS the one to blame in WWII
*WWII involved harsher conditions, a brutal genocide, and more advanced technology than WWI
*Women who took jobs in WWII stuck with them after the war
*WWII was after a terrible economic depression and was the reason for U.S. emergence out of the depression
*U.S. actually joined the peace-keeping organization that was proposed after WWII
*the U.S. was actually attacked during WWII in its own territory (Pearl Harbor)
*WWII had more dire results in the area of racism: Japanese Americans were segregated and put into internment camps on account of Exective Order 9066

ELIANA PER.3
Another difference was that the US senate quickly accepted to be a part of the UN at the end of WWII while back in WWI, the US denied to be a part of the league of nations.
another thing that makes WWII different is that many of its battles were fought in air while WWI battles were fought in trenches.
Similarities/Differences between WWI & WWII.
Similarities (:
-Germany was America’s main enemy
-The public had to be persuaded into joining the war by events impacting Americans
-submarine warfare
-Pearl Harbor
-Both wars influenced America greatly by taking a step back from being an isolationist nation
-Women’s role in the work force during both wars increased dramatically
-goal was to remian neutral(failing both times)
Differences (:
-During WW II the U.S. was totally determined not to get into economic issues with any belligerent nations.
-“cash and carry” policy
-Later it had to do the Lend-Lease Bill in order to help out Britain even more
-U.S. was determined not do repeat what had happened in WWI.
- The technology in WWII was way more advanced than in WWI
- Japan in the first world war was part of the allies but in the second world war it became one of the axis powers
-War War I had been more supported by the public than the Second Great War.
- US passes Neutrality Acts to
officially proclaim their
neutrality in WWII
I agree with Brittney Chavez when she says that in both war U.S. tried to remain neutral, practiced isolationism.(neutral acts) Also i agree withh mikeb when he says that a difference was the techonology, it was much more improved in WWII compared to WWI.
Similarities:
- World War I and World War II were very similar in foreign policy and attempting international peace corporations like the League of Nations and the United Nations respectively.
Differences:
- Peace treaties in which WWI peace treaty was geared towards punishing Germany, whereas the agreements in the Yalta conference were more influenced by creating a long-lasting peace.
- Within the U.S. society and WWI the U.S. public media promoted U.S. interventions where as the within WWII America First Committee demoted U.S. interventions. Direct attack on Pearl Harbor caused intervention
- United States policies towards creating peace treaty were more accepted within WWII than during the Treaty of Versailles after WWI.
