The end of the Civil War saw the changing of many policies in the federal government relating to the treatment of African Americans and that towards westward expansion with land grants and the eviction of Native Americans.

During and after the civil war the US had to decide how to change the federal government to better the North and the South sides. Bills like the Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment which freed slaves and sealed the war as a North victory. But Lincoln's 10year plan and Reconstruction helped the South get back on its feet afterward.

Although it would be predicted that the end of the Civil War would bring unity and a permanent comprise between the North and South, conflicts were still inevitable. The North's economic plan differed from that of the South. The freemen's wish to be submitted to society was still persistent. The economic conflicts and traditional racial beliefs that lingered before the War even began would continue after the surrender at Appomattox; such problems would limit the changes that conflicting sides fought for.

As a result to the Civil War the federal governments role in race relations provided benefits and rights to African Americans, however many of them were disregarded and not upheld by southern states, and the governments role in the western expansion increased in which they provided lands to citizens through the Homestead Act and the expansion of railroad.

As Civil War devatated the nation the role of the federal government has greatly increased. The federal government had created amendments to protect the newly free African Americans, it also gave land grants and encouraged americans to settle westward for cheap, new land.

Since the drafting of the constitution, in which the government of the U.S was officially formed, it has shifted and fluctuated to match the necesities of its nation and it proved true to its past by once again adjusting to the time of the Civil War by taking a stance against slavery by forming the Freedman's Bureau and the Emancipation Proclamation and also recognizing the feeling of Manifest Destiny and encouraging it by the issuance of lang grants and clearing way for the white settler.

My thesis:

As the Civil War began, happened, and ended the main reason for it was that of African Americans' freedom, the Federal goverment's changing role was seen through the race relations and westward expansion of the U.S that took place between 1861-1877.

The Second Great Awakening was a time of discovery and expression. People were discovering things that they had not known about whether it be physical or simply psychological. Due to those discoveries they expressed what they believed that the most beneficial for the topic at hand. There were many great leaders during this time period who impacted this time period and many events that were major impacts of this. All in all, the North's Great Awakening influenced abolition and temperance more than the cult of domesticity or a utopian society.

Though the Civil War was fought in hopes to end the controversial issue of slavery between the North and South, it continued to show the distinct beliefs, customs, and political tension between the two regions that led to the changes in the federal government such as refocusing on the protection of African American rights through the issuing of the Emancipation of Proclamation in declaring the freedom of all slaves, and the encouragement of westward expansion through the Homestead Act that provided free land grants to white settlers.

The role of the federal government changed because even after the creation of constitutional Amendments, new organizations for the betterment of African Americans still had to battle the newly formed movements that restricted rights of freed slaves; and acts related to Westward Expansion as well as the ideology that the U.S had a divine mission to extend its power and civilization across the breadth of North America promoted settlement in the western frontier.

After the Civil War, an era of Reconstruction took place, distinctly changing the role of the federal government; Congress now began to enact laws that would protect the rights of all citizens, no matter what race. And although Native Americans were still subject to federal removal, due to America's continuous westward expansion, the federal government now attempted to do it in a less severe way.

The end of the Civil War brought about significant changes in the federal government. Since the North won, the role of the federal government favored that of appealing to the North, that is protecting and helping the African Americans. This type of protection led to land grants for the African Americans to traverse west as well as created acts that increased race relations with African Americans.

The years that marked the period from 1861-1877 marked a drastic change in the federal government both on a social and economic scale. While the civil war had primarily imposed the question of slavery and economic divergence, Reconstruction in 1863 silenced sectional aggression toward the issue of slavery and race relations. Economically, the North dominated in industry and progression.

Since the role of the federal government was directed towards African Americans because the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were made to protect them, issues dealing with race relations arose; also westward expansion changed the role of the federal government due to beliefs such as Manifest Destiny that encouraged cheap land and land grants and basically cleared the way for the whites who believed in this.
